I adjust my teaching style to compliment each student individually. My goal is for each student to enjoy playing their instrument, but I believe that the personal improvement of each student is vital for their continued interest and passion. I take it upon myself to make sure that my teaching is resulting in personal enjoyment and improvement! I also believe that studying a musical instrument is useful for developing things like problem solving skills, perseverance, building good habits, having a good work ethic, and being responsible. It is important to me that each of my students learns to love their instrument. But, even more than the love of their instrument, is the importance of knowing and understanding one's instrument. A St. Louis native, I have been studying the violin/viola since I was 9 years old. I am an enthusiastic and caring instructor who enjoys working with students and watching them grow. Currently I am in my senior year at UMSL, pursuing a bachelor's degree in Music Education. I currently serve as the principal viola in my school's orchestra, the UMSL Symphony Orchestra. In addition to music, I am also studying math and intend to become certified to teach both math and music! Read More

For beginners I use a method book for learning how to read music and learn music theory. Once the basics are attained I introduce scales and etudes to build on the technical aspects of playing the instrument. Solo books are also added to the repertoire for the student so that they can use everything they have learned thus far and express that in a piece of music. Younger children will not do as much music reading in the beginning of lessons. Read More

For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Belwin Course for Strings, String Builder. Once the student has progressed to have a knowledge of the fundamentals, I begin to introduce solo repertoire from the Suzuki method. I continue hand-in-hand the String Builder and Suzuki methods. I also have group classes where students learn to play as an ensemble, such as duets quartets, and string ensembles/orchestra. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons interesting and fun, no matter their ability level. Read More
