I began teaching private students while in college through a music store in Ellicott City, MD. I taught students from age 6 to 15. I had up to 15 students on varied occasions. I maintained students on and off throughout my 7 years of music teaching in public schools following graduating from college, but lost many students when I relocated from Baltimore to Lancaster. For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements, especially for brass instruments. I also tend to mix in some fun songs that are more well known using my own arrangements. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. It is important to me to get the student playing familiar tunes as soon as possible so that they enjoy playing but not at the expense of the fundamentals. Generally, I choose a piece for a student to play and then they choose a piece. Of course I emphasize the rudiments of each instrument and I incorporate technique into each piece they choose and each piece I choose.
