For beginning students who are picking up their instrument for the first time, I like to start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. These introductory books are the ones I first learned from, and feature a wide variety of musical styles to give students an idea of the breadth of possibilities on their instrument. Once the student has a firm understanding of the basics of the instrument, or with students who have prior playing experience, I will turn to more standard method and technique books, such as Arban's Conservatory Methods or Clarke's Technical Studies. In addition to the study of the trumpet, I have also taken two years of private voice lessons with an accomplished opera singer and interned in the office and on the road for professional children's music band, The Cat's Pajamas.
