I believe in approaching each student individually. Each student's ability and/or understanding, no matter the level, may very, sometime drastically. So I tend to each student's individual needs on a case-by-case basis. I use various methods such as the Arban's book for fundamentals, Bordogni vocalise for lyrical style and stamina, various solo repertoire, and many more depending on the student's level of skills and understanding. I am a professional jazz musician and composer in the Tampa Bay Area, playing gigs whenever I can, subbing in for USF, writing music for marching bands and other jazz groups, and more! For beginning students, I would suggest that a practice log be kept in terms of how long they practice each day along with an outline of which exercises or pieces should be done for that amount of time. I suggest students take breaks, even every 5-10 minutes as it relaxes the fingers and the mind and helps minimize frustration or boredom. My teaching experience began in high school, when I worked with the summer band programs of several local middle schools and gave incoming beginning band students a head start on learning the basics of brass instruments. I continued teaching similar programs in college, including middle and high school summer band programs that included sectionals, chamber ensembles, and small music theory classes.
