I graduated from Ole Miss in 2007 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism with minors in both Music and English and I graduated again in 2012 with a Master of Arts degree in Teaching English as a Second Language with a subfield in Music. I always explore different methods that might fit the age and personality of the student but for keyboard lessons I have found success with the Alfred Piano Method. Instrumental lessons usually follow the method book that is selected by their school band director. Beyond that I have a large library of supplementary music to expand the students interest with new styles and composers.I'm very flexible with the method books and after I get to know the student I can select a method that would work the best for instruction. The first thing I do when teaching a student is to learn what musical goals and aspirations the student may have. Then, depending on age and experience, I build a custom program for the student, which may include using various books, resources, and even materials which I have created. I have found that this is not only the most effective way for me to teach but also the most effective way to connect with students where they are and for them to learn at their own pace while also enjoying the process. Music, at its most basic, should be fun, and I try to impart that to my students. Lessons with me involve jokes, fun music, and taking our music making to the extreme. In addition, I strive to teach music as a language; learning it both aurally and visually, developing an ear for music and self-evaluation while learning to read the notes on the page.
