My approach to teaching is based on the goals of each individual student. I always ask the student what their skill level is and what their goals are, and I use that information to create the right lesson for each individual. I also always encourage students to be honest about what they like and don't like about the lessons, and I am never bothered if a student doesn't like something or wants to do things differently. For flute beginning students, I usually start with the Essential Elements. Once the student has grasped the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their skill level. For flute intermediate to advanced students, I try to find out what the student is interested in, what they have previously worked on, and what their goals are musically. I like to focus on fundamentals such as extended scales in various patterns, etudes geared towards development of a specific technical aspect, and solo repertoire containing these fundamentals. I have the ability to be sensitive to and match the learning pace of any student at any age, regardless of any learning challenges. I very much believe that anyone can learn any craft in music if they're willing to put in the work. Every lesson is engaging, fun, highly informative, inspiring, and musically advancing. Students can learn just about anything they'd want to learn from very innovative angles that are often tailor-made to the individual student's learning ability. Read More

For beginning students, I always start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. I've found this book to be the best at introducing the instrument and reading the music. I may or may not continue teaching out of the books (there's 3), but that depends on the student. By book 2 or 3 I usually begin introducing Suzuki, as there are many solo pieces for them. Suzuki is also great for teaching technique, which is essential to their skill-set. Read More

I started working with youth as a counselor when I was 15 years old, which soon transitioned to helping students in my high school band integrate concepts and theory that seem at first like a foreign language. During college, as a student majoring in Chinese, I continued to teach guitar lessons during my stays in China. My work as a tutor continued through my A.A. at Laney College, and through this experience I have fine tuned my perception of my student's strengths and and areas of need. Read More
