My methods depend on and are catered to the skill level and age of the student. Overall, I focus on methodologies that combine technique building, musicality, and ear training. For novice students, I utilize Suzuki methodology as well as Essential Elements for very young students. I strive to incorporate student preferred music into lessons, as I believe that this encourages a love for the instrument, as well as learning music as a whole. Read More

For beginner students, I start with Hal Leonard's "Essential Elements for Strings" Book 1. This book is not only great for learning the fundamentals of the instrument (such as the names of the parts of the instrument, how to hold the instrument, etc.) but it also the best book I have found to teach beginning students how to read music on the violin and viola. For beginning students in any genre, I begin with learning songs. Classical, jazz, bluegrass, and rock are more easily understood when you spend time playing the music with someone else. Repertoire is chosen with the understanding that fundamentals are key to life long participation and students find positive success when they are able to then share a completed work with their friends and family (think holiday get-togethers!) For young intermediate to advanced players, the philosophy of building one's repertoire continues with the added focus on musical understanding. Read More
