For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. Students are really the cornerstone of my teaching style. Many teachers use a "one size fits all" methodology to their students. By tailoring my teaching to my students specific talents, they will be very eager to learn! Students all have different learning styles, and different concepts they struggle with. I use students' learning styles to develop the skills to learn concepts. Learning each and individual technique does indeed work. A student will play their best when they feel at ease with the instrument and discover how naturally and physically rewarding playing the cello can be. The materials I use with students depend completely on the student’s current playing level. With complete beginners I tend to work from the Suzuki Books or Hal Leonard’s Essential Element books and in addition supply a collection of specialized exercises, scales and warm ups focused on developing fluid technique from the start.
