My method of teaching is that I always start from the theoretical part of every instrument or skill I teach because if they don’t have the background understanding they will be limited in their performances. Each voice student has different goals for themselves - whether it's gaining the confidence to sing in their church choir or pave their path to stardom, I take these goals into account each moment of our time together. As stated above, I believe that emotion plays an integral role in the mastery and performance of any instrument. Consequently, my teaching style revolves around the use and application of emotion in play. A simple example of this would be a simple discussion of the differences between major and minor chords and the relative emotion conveyed by each, as interpreted by the student. I like to start with basics in every way.. holding the instrument,tuning,songs that interest them,styles, and some history. I want people to be able to play some basic songs fairly quickly. Seeing results in yourself is important to keep motivated. I think it can seem like a impossible thing sometimes. I believe the same rules of musicianship in classical based performing can be learned from a more contemporary aspect.
