To me, the most important thing a student can gain from piano lessons is a love for music. I know each individual progresses at different speeds, and I try to be realistic about what they can do with their present abilities. I am big on positive feedback, for I feel most people learn better with a greater amount of compliments than criticism. I do use constructive criticism, but first I always give an uplifting comment. It is my belief that a teacher must be adaptive in order to create a positive experience for each student. For this reason, along with the lesson books, I prefer to help the student learn about what genre of music they are the most interested in. For beginning students who are children, I typically start out with the Faber method books. Once they begin to grasp the fundamentals, I begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate to their interest and skill level. For adults, I cater my instruction and choice of repertoire to their interests and ability, creating engaging, satisfying, and enjoyable lessons for students of any skill level. I typically introduce theory concepts early on, giving the student the musical foundation they need to learn and create independently. Read More

I encourage my students to practice smart instead of long. This is especially important for young students. I teach my students to self-evaluate their own playing. When difficult areas are recognized, this is where the practicing focus should be. Above all, music should be enjoyable! Hard work disguised as FUN is my goal. I am great at giving positive feedback. I enjoy celebrating success. I feel that it is important to let the student set the pace and then encourage from there. Read More
