I am a motivated teacher and performer who loves to create beautiful art and help others develop a love for music. I want my students to have a list of repertoire songs that they are always working on. The more piano playing, the better they are. Of course this varies with age. I enjoy playing the great classics and strive to teach each student to do their very best. But I am a very patient teacher and cautious not overwhelm my student during their learning. I like to engage with my students on a personal level in addition to a student/teacher perspective. I've found that when my students are excited to see me each week, they are more willing to follow my instruction and try their best when it comes to practicing. An important aspect of this philosophy is giving the student a chance to choose their own music. Initially, they begin learning things at my instruction and through my own curriculum or the curriculum of the Bastien or Hal Leonard books, but I also let them choose one of their favorite songs for us to work on together. When students feel like musicians it fosters a greater sense of ownership and accomplishment bringing the joy needed to advance exponentially. My teaching experience dates back to when i was in college, as I began teaching private lessons part time 15 years ago. I would teach to earn extra money when i was in college, as well as accompany other musicians as a side gig. I also have some experience playing piano and singing at a local coffee house from time to time. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize with all my students as it develops the flexibility in the hands and fingers that is needed for the more challenging pieces of music.
