It is a privilege to be able to be a part of the development of a musical goal no matter the age or skill level. I take it upon myself to make sure that each student achieves his or her musical goals. I start all my beginners with getting to learn their instrument, the fundamentals of music like scales and progressions and some fun simple songs or melodies. I like to engage with my students on a personal level in addition to a student/teacher perspective. I've found that when my students are excited to see me each week, they are more willing to follow my instruction and try their best when it comes to practicing. An important aspect of this philosophy is giving the student a chance to choose their own music. Initially, they begin learning things at my instruction and through my own curriculum or the curriculum of the Bastien or Hal Leonard books, but I also let them choose one of their favorite songs for us to work on together. For beginning percussion students who are children, I typically start with Kennan Wylie's Simple Steps to Successful Beginning Percussion and Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Once the student has grasped the fundamentals of playing and reading, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I like to find out what what the student is interested in learning, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep lessons engaging and fun, no matter the ability. Read More

I began giving private lessons in 2003, and have taught in my own studio since 2010. I have taught group percussion to elementary -aged students and worked with a high school band and percussion ensemble. I have also been a music teacher in the OKC public schools, working with PK through 6th grade. I am certified by the Oklahoma Department of Education in instrumental music for PK-12.
