I have various methods of teaching, all tailored to each students' strengths. However, all students will learn to be musicians and by becoming one, students will develop their personal styles and unique musical signature all while being coached in proper musical training. As each student learns to be a musician, they will also learn purpose in music which is the drive that will allow them to be successful. Musicianship and purpose are key elements to open many possibilities in music beyond learning to read sheet music or follow a TAB. Read More

After that I start teaching them how to read music and progress onto harder pieces. During this time, I also incorporate teaching the student a song of their own choosing in order to keep them engaged and excited about learning the play music. For piano students, we begin working out of the Bastien piano series immediately, and my percussion students learn from the Hal Leonard Percussion books. Read More

Once the student has grasped the fundamentals of playing and reading, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I like to find out what what the student is interested in learning, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep lessons engaging and fun, no matter the ability. Read More

I like to use The Drum Set Musician, by Rod Morganstein and Rick Mattingly, as my primer and launching pad, and I strive to show students how to maximize written exercises by building new concepts upon them. This is a great idea generator. If a student comes to me with established interests, I tailor the lessons to those. If a student comes to me as a clean slate, we will explore different styles of music until we find that spark. Read More
