I like to engage with my students on a personal level in addition to a student/teacher perspective. I've found that when my students are excited to see me each week, they are more willing to follow my instruction and try their best when it comes to practicing. An important aspect of this philosophy is giving the student a chance to choose their own music. Initially, they begin learning things at my instruction and through my own curriculum or the curriculum of the Bastien or Hal Leonard books, but I also let them choose one of their favorite songs for us to work on together. He started me off on the drum kit, then we added percussion when I got to middle school and marching snare drum from middle to high school. At a young age, I was exposed to practicing different percussion instruments all the time. I've been able to apply percussion knowledge to drum set, marching snare drum etc. It's important that a student is able to play more than a single percussion instrument or if they are a drum set player, to not be limited to a single genre. My only reward is seeing one of my students getting better, and developing a passion for music! I will work with each student at their own pace to ensure that they are able to reach realistic goals. I will encourage students to be problem solvers by LISTENING to my instruction, APPLYING what they have heard, and then LEARNING from what they've applied. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and I will do my best to figure out what inspires the student so that i can access my instructions successfully to their needs.
