I have various methods of teaching, all tailored to each students' strengths. For my beginning guitar students, we begin with basic chords and simple melodies to develop motor function, finger strength/dexterity, and calluses on the fingertips. After that I start teaching them how to read music and progress onto harder pieces. During this time, I also incorporate teaching the student a song of their own choosing in order to keep them engaged and excited about learning the play music. For beginning percussion students who are children, I typically start with Kennan Wylie's Simple Steps to Successful Beginning Percussion and Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Once the student has grasped the fundamentals of playing and reading, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance.
