I began my teaching career during my studies at UWF, where I was brought on as Instructor of Music at Olive Baptist School of Performing Arts, here I taught guitar, brass, and voice. I have also been on the staff at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp since 2011, where I spent two summers as the vocal coach for the International Choir Ensemble of the Blue Lake International Exchange Program. My method for teaching is usually based mainly on repertoire. I use a series of books called the Neil A. KJOS Piano Library. In every lesson we will work on and practice two to four pieces of music from different genres and time periods. For beginner students, we will use elements in the music to learn theory and technique. As the student progresses we will begin to have conversations about interpretation and the history behind the music. Read More

I find the Hal Leonard Series works as a tool for helping students understand musical concepts right away. For students who are more advanced I will plan their lessons based on what their goals are. Hello future students! I much enjoy sharing my experience as a creative musician to my students whether they are 5 or 55, beginner or advanced. I am a patient teacher and do my best to encourage each student to find themselves as unique learners (musicians) unto themselves. I graduated from Columbia College Chicago in 2002 with a BA focus on Music Composition. While recently living in NYC, I formed a 12-member saxophone orchestra, composed and recorded two symphonies, performed and recorded with the late Glenn Branca's 100 Guitar Ensemble, and provided live Sound Design for renowned poetess Anne Carson.
