2017 - Jacobs School of Music Premier Young Artist Award

Overview:
I have always had a deep passion for music. For as long as I can remember, music has been a part of my life in so many ways. I have been a performer since before I can remember and love teaching and sharing my passion with children and students of all ages. In Spring of 2020 I graduated with a Bachelors of Music in piano performance from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. I am now living and working in Grand Rapids Michigan, building a career as a performer and teacher. Teaching you and or your children would be a delight. I am looking forward to working with you very soon!
EXPERIENCE
I've been teaching regularly for about seven years. Ever since I started with my first student, I have loved every minute of it. I am always passionate and encouraging, and you can be sure that lessons with me will be engaging and loads of fun. I believe that you can't learn anything without making mistakes, so don't be afraid of trying new things and asking lots of questions. Of course practicing is very important to be successful as a musician, but it can be hard to stay focused and to maintain motivation and patients. I am confident that with me, you will gain the tools you need to improve your skills in the lesson and at home.
METHODS USED
My method for teaching is usually based mainly on repertoire. I use a series of books called the Neil A. KJOS Piano Library. In every lesson we will work on and practice two to four pieces of music from different genres and time periods. For beginner students, we will use elements in the music to learn theory and technique. As the student progresses we will begin to have conversations about interpretation and the history behind the music. At the end of every semester we will select a piece that we have studied to play for a recital. I will also encourage the student to be creative and to always try to write his or her own compositions. In the end, my hope is that my students will fall passionately in love with music and that they will enjoy and look forward to every lesson and performance.
LESSON STYLE

You can not learn anything without making mistakes. You can't make mistakes without trying something new. There is also never a mistake that you can make that you won't learn something from. So, I always tell my students that when they make a mistake, to celebrate. And to celebrate, we throw our hands in the air and shout "How Fascinating!" I tailor every lesson to be a conversation between the student, the instrument and myself. We work at the students pace, celebrate progress, and really celebrate those mistakes. I encourage the student to be creative and to think of there own ways of getting the piano to produce the sound that they want. In every lesson we will talk and laugh and most importantly, make the most beautiful music we can.

Mr. Justin is a terrific piano teacher! My ten-year-old daughter's playing has gotten significantly better during the 2 months that she has been working with him. Mr. Justin has been teaching her how to practice by explaining how and why to practice in certain ways and giving her written instructions each week about what to do during practice that week. That has helped a lot. He's also great about keeping my daughter focused during lessons, which is not always easy with my outgoing, chatty girl. Finally, we've opted for remote lessons because of the pandemic. Mr. Justin works very well in the format, and I don't feel like we're missing anything by keeping safe at home. Overall, Mr. Justin is wonderful, and you'll love him as a piano teacher!

Mr. Justin is very responsible. He's been our daughter's piano teacher for about 6 months now and our daughter has made great progress in multiple aspects during the past 6 months! He sees our daughter as a future pianist not just a student or a kid and we really appreciate his professionalism. We'd like to stick to Mr. Justin as long as possible!

My experience with Mr. Justin has been absolutely incredible, I highly recommend him. Because unlike most music teachers, he's super dedicated with every detail and technique, trying to sculpt us into perfection in an easy but also fun way of learning/teaching. I honestly appreciate what Mr. Justin has taught me, and I know that I can never thank him enough.

Justin is a great teacher of our 9 year old son. He has a comprehensive approach to teaching piano rather than just focusing on learning songs. He is encouraging and challenges our son to improve each week of lessons and practice. We appreciate him so much!

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
