I choose music that will help students in many different areas. Students need some music that will help them work on fundamentals: long tones, slurs, articulations, and scales. Students also need to play music they enjoy. All of my students, in addition to the fundamentals of good playing, bring in music that is enjoyable to play and that they like. For beginning students who are in a school music program, I start with whatever the preferred beginner's method that their band uses: usually Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. As they progress I use a mixture of their music from school and etudes and exercises to improve their reading and technical abilities. I also utilize many listening and repeating techniques outside of reading. It is important to have the connection of ear to playing with music just as with a language. Read More
