One of the most rewarding moments for me as a teaching is that "lightbulb moment" when a student finally gets it, and I know that I helped guide them there. Though music theory and the abstract concepts of tonal harmony are wonderful tools to help broaden the spectrum of ones creativity, they are not what make a musician a good musician.
