I began teaching drums and percussion around my senior year of high school (1999). For guitar/bass guitar, I began teaching sometime in 2009. I feel very fortunate regarding my teaching experiences. In the beginning and still today, I tend to spark a musical interest in people through performance -- and just as often -- conversation. I was also an instructor at the Stephen Collins Foster Music Camp, a counselor at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp, and the Music Mentor of the Resident College of Arts in Humanities at MSU. I served as a woodwind specialist for marching bands for several years. I previously taught classes on music technology and composition at MSU and assisted in Early Childhood music classes at CMS. My methods vary from student to student, but a constant in my methodology is doing what I can to make the student fall in love with the instrument in their own way. Some students progress better with curriculum and disciplines right off the bat, while others need the instrument as more of an expression and an outlet, so Ive learned to respect that. For adult students I seek to find what the students is most interested in (classical, jazz, rock, bass nova, etc.), and then go from there in terms of finding repertoire and creating my own custom lessons plans, centered around the student's goals. For beginning students who are children, I typically start with a method book geared specifically for children. Regardless of age or skill level I teach all of my students how to read music, and specifically how to read music on the guitar. Read More
