While I am demanding of my students, I set high standards only because I am confident in a student's abilities. Few things are as rewarding for me than being able to witness one of my students thrive in the performing arts! Therefore, it is important that my students have as much fun as possible and can feel accomplished achieving firm, yet reachable, personal goals. Acknowledging accomplishments helps students feel valued and like their efforts are worth something - fostering a readiness to learn more. My teaching style revolves around getting to know my student and his or her abilities/playing style. No two students learn exactly the same way, and giving one on one instruction is where we can work together to develop and progress in a customized way. I approach any kind of teaching as team work. Age-friendly materials are my favorite to use. For very young pianists I often buy books with lots of color and large print like Kjos's Piano Party. Kjos and Alfred are two of my favorite publishers, but I am willing to work with materials your family may already own. Flashcards are an important tool for many children to become fluent at naming/reading notes. I also like to have students complete written theory assignments, and, to help students from getting bored, I often "reward" them with single pieces of fun sheet music that can be performed for recitals and competitions. I have fourteen years of teaching experience. I first began teaching in my early years of high school through my school’s music mentor program. Through this program, I had the opportunity to go back to my old elementary school and mentor trumpet students one on one. It was there that I fell in love with teaching because of how rewarding it is to see the next generation of musicians grow and how I can have a direct impact on their growth. Read More
