Although education and teaching was my focus, I excelled in music performance as well. Age-friendly materials are my favorite to use. For very young pianists I often buy books with lots of color and large print like Kjos's Piano Party. Kjos and Alfred are two of my favorite publishers, but I am willing to work with materials your family may already own. Flashcards are an important tool for many children to become fluent at naming/reading notes. I also like to have students complete written theory assignments, and, to help students from getting bored, I often "reward" them with single pieces of fun sheet music that can be performed for recitals and competitions. It's my goal to meet a student where they are, and maintain a big-picture mentality. I like to know what other interests they have so that I can draw parallels between those and music. While I am demanding of my students, I set high standards only because I am confident in a student's abilities. As a teacher it has always been my goal to inspire my students to connect with music in a meaningful way. I do this by teaching at each students' own pace and setting acheivable goals along the way to encourage progress and to create an atmosphere where my students are able to succeed. There is no greater joy that seeing a student take on a challenge and conquer it. Few things are as rewarding for me than being able to witness one of my students thrive in the performing arts! Therefore, it is important that my students have as much fun as possible and can feel accomplished achieving firm, yet reachable, personal goals. Acknowledging accomplishments helps students feel valued and like their efforts are worth something - fostering a readiness to learn more.
