I began teaching back in my sophomore year of high school when one of my friends wanted to learn how to play the piano. I gave them half hour lessons once a week and tailored my teaching to fit what techniques they wanted to learn. After that, I began branching out and teaching other friends, and eventually found myself helping out the middle school bands during my study hall. Age-friendly materials are my favorite to use. For very young pianists I often buy books with lots of color and large print like Kjos's Piano Party. Kjos and Alfred are two of my favorite publishers, but I am willing to work with materials your family may already own. Flashcards are an important tool for many children to become fluent at naming/reading notes. I also like to have students complete written theory assignments, and, to help students from getting bored, I often "reward" them with single pieces of fun sheet music that can be performed for recitals and competitions. I have been teaching private lessons for over 8 years. Some of my students competed in state solo and ensemble competitions and received Gold and Silver awards. Other students have participated in recitals, music camps, and marching bands. Before I started giving lessons, I volunteered with a community group in Indiana called the Phillips Music Guild of Indianapolis. I'm a 2018 graduate of Temple University's Boyer College of Music, where I earned my Bachelor of Music degree in Jazz Studies: Saxophone Performance. I play the Saxophone, Clarinet, and Piano, and I'm glad to be teaching students all of these instruments. At Temple, I studied under saxophonists Dick Oatts and Ben Schachter. I lead my own Jazz Quartet, and I've performed with groups including the Philadelphia Funk Authority, Temple Avenue Quintet, Tony Gairo's Crosscurrent Big Band, and the Work In Progress Jazz Orchestra. I have been consistently involved with teacher music since my graduation from high school in 2007. In the Fort Wayne, IN area, I have worked with marching, jazz, and concert bands with multiple middle and high schools. I also have experience teaching smaller ensembles and private lessons.
