I believe that there is no one method you can use for every student. Method books can be useful but I try not to rely on them because I always found them boring if overused. I try to build lessons around styles of music that the student is interested in. It's always a balancing act trying to find the music for each student. The trick is to find music that is challenging enough for them to learn from playing it, interesting enough for them to want to pick their instrument up and practice, but not too challenging that they'll get frustrated with it. Setting goals and tracking progress are essential to learning an instrument. I will work with the student to set goals for each lesson and show them great ways to track their progress as they practice throughout the week. Lessons are very highly structured and focused on helping the students grow as much as possible. My teaching experience starts when I was in high school. I taught private lessons as well as the lead instructor in our percussion class granted by the director. When I was in high school, I wrote to percussion scores for our marching shows. In my senior year, I was picked up by a musical touring group, and I was able to play drum set with professionals.
