I'm a true music lover all around, and I hope to share that with my students as well as cultivate their skills. I am currently a junior Music Education major and philosophy minor at the University of Arkansas and I plan to continue to graduate school afterwards for Clarinet Performance. I am primarily a classical clarinetist, as I have a lot of experience in varying types of ensembles and solo work. In addition, I also have experience with marching styles of saxophone. While my primary and most advanced instrument is clarinet, I can also teach saxophone to an intermediate.
I am currently still in school for teaching, so I am hooping that I can gain true practice teaching privately. I have always helped my band directors teach my clarinet sections during tryout sessions. Aside from musical technique, I also plan to offer my students support in all aspects of their lives. Some of my primary values are equality and mental health, so I plan to offer them opportunities that fit within their needs. Since I am only 20, I feel that I will be able to connect to my students and offer a safe environment for them.
My primary focus is students in the high school age, so I mainly use a student-focused teaching style. I want my students to have a say in what we're doing, as well as allow them to practice analyzing the music themselves rather than telling them what to see. The primary idea of it is that it gives the students and the teachers a chance to switch roles. The four roles in reciprocal teaching are summarizing, questioning, clarifying, and predicting. These concepts work together by first having to summarize the major musical concepts of the piece, solidifying this meaning through questioning, being asked to clarify these musical concepts, and then predicting the parts that will cause the students trouble (the impact).
As a teacher, my primary belief is in working together to create the best practice system that is possible for each individual. I feel that the students always do their best whenever they know that the people around them support them and are also working to make sure that they are getting the best education possible, and this includes the parents as well. I have always looked forward to being able to watch my students improve over the years, so I will do my best to remain my student's instructor for as long as possible, and under the pretense that I would relocate, I will also try my best to find them a new teacher.
