For beginning students who are children, I typically start with the Standard of Excellence Method Book 1. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of those fundamentals, I will begin to introduce other method books and solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. Fundamentals will still be a major part of every lesson even after the student has grasp them. I began teaching music in 2010 as a high school senior. I quickly began to love it and decided to make it my career. I have taught K-12 grade music as well as a private clarinet and saxophone studio before realizing that I wanted to get back to performing and growing my studio. I moved to Fayetteville and started my masters at the University of Arkansas. I have performed with the Hutchinson Community Band, Lindsborg Community Band, Lindsborg Community Orchestra, Christian Youth Theatre of Wichita, Hutchinson Community Theatre, Dodge City Cowboy Band and many more college level ensembles. I believe that there is no one method you can use for every student. Method books can be useful but I try not to rely on them because I always found them boring if overused. I try to build lessons around styles of music that the student is interested in. It's always a balancing act trying to find the music for each student. The trick is to find music that is challenging enough for them to learn from playing it, interesting enough for them to want to pick their instrument up and practice, but not too challenging that they'll get frustrated with it.
