For beginning students who have never touched music in their lives (mostly children), I start out with the Hal Leonard's Essential Elements book of their chosen instrument. From there, we learn how to read music, play in time, and play the instrument itself. Once the student feels comfortable with the practices in the book, I move on to introduce solo repertoire to prepare for a recital. I have been involved in music as a player since 1966, and have been a featured soloist on both trumpet and clarinet with concert bands around the Southeast. I began playing my secondary instrument (trumpet) in 1970, and have studied conducting with symphony orchestras and concert bands.
