For beginning students who have never touched music in their lives (mostly children), I start out with the Hal Leonard's Essential Elements book of their chosen instrument. From there, we learn how to read music, play in time, and play the instrument itself. Once the student feels comfortable with the practices in the book, I move on to introduce solo repertoire to prepare for a recital. I focus on a skills based learning regimen. I often start beginners out without using a book, just learning to make the instrument perform before we add the complexities of music notation to the mix. With more advanced students I work on the small details of mastering the instrument, and translate that into performance. I favor method books that drill the student in those details, and add solo material for variety and to introduce different performance styles. Read More

I love anything to do with music. I could be playing, or someone else could be playing, I truely enjoy music. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Therapeutic Recreation. This means that I use reacreation as therapy for people with disabilities. I used music in a lot of my activities. I am in school now for a Master's in Special Education. I do request they practice a minimum of 30 minutes per day, 5 days a week. Also, I spend at least an hour preparing for a one hour lesson. At the end of each lesson I critique the progress, and give the student, and its parent a written copy of the critique, as well a written lesson plan for the upcoming week.
