I'm a very dedicated instructor who loves working with my students. And I learn as much from them as they do from me, which enhances my ability to teach. In 1966 I graduated from Millikin University in Decatur, Il, where I been a full scholarship applied clarinet major. Earlier, I was a charter member of School Band of America-European concert tour. I was also the enlisted band leader for the Alabama Army National Guard Band, culminating with replacing the West Point band in New York and playing a concert at Rockefeller Center in New York City. I love to see students learn to love music. When I first meet the student I do a quick assessment(ask about 5 questions) to see what the student may already know. After the assessment I work on the skills the student needs to work on. I always give positive feedback. For instance "you got this right, and you are doing well at it, lets focus on this skill now." My teaching style includes positive reinforcement, making and achieving small measurable goals that lead to big measurable goals, and teaching and instilling correct daily practice methods. I encourage each student to do their best each day and push through the difficult places. When something is too difficult for a student, I break it down into smaller, more understandable pieces, or change tactics to a different subject or piece. I have had two students make first chair in All-State competition, and many Solo and Ensemble Award winners.
