I do request they practice a minimum of 30 minutes per day, 5 days a week. Also, I spend at least an hour preparing for a one hour lesson. At the end of each lesson I critique the progress, and give the student, and its parent a written copy of the critique, as well a written lesson plan for the upcoming week. I myself am a music student on my way to study at University of Alabama for a Bachelor's in Music Education. I have been privately instructing students of all ages for a full three years, starting when I was fifteen. I like to start where the student is. For my youngest students, we begin with the basics of counting and the music alphabet. For older students and adults, I assess prior knowledge and go from there. i like to have the students help me create up to three goals for the semester or year so that we can have something specific to aim for and measure.
