My philosophy for quality music education has three main parts: appreciation, practice, literacy. I braid all three of these parts into each lesson, with a student focused approach. I've been teaching students young and old for over 10 years how to improve on their instrument or in their field and achieve their goals. To me the most exciting thing about teaching one-on-one lessons is the ability to individualize each lesson to the particular students' needs, abilities and desires. I want my students to get out of their lessons what they want to get out of them, so I love working with students who have a good idea of what they are aiming for and are willing to work hard to get there. When it comes to beginning band students, I will typically use the Standards of Excellence book. But, depending on the students and their abilities, I will try Essential Elements, as well. For piano students, I will use Bastien Piano Basics, Fabor Piano Adventures or Alfred's Basic Piano, depending on the age group. After the students start to understand the foundation and fundamentals of their instrument, then I will find a piece of music for them to learn as a soloist. Read More

I believe demonstrating and guiding students in the technique of practicing is critical, and I lead with providing the motivation that says they, the student, can control their enjoyment of their instrument. By providing critical and lateral thinking when applying new concepts, the responsibility of comprehension rests solely on the student, allowing them to own and solidify what they know and how they acquired that knowledge.
