I have been a private music teacher for the last 20 years. I have worked for 15 years in a Big Band that performed educational concerts and brought live performances and exposure of musical instruments to kindergarten, elementary, middle, and high schools that sometimes did not have the luxury of a music program. I've found that presenting multiple solutions to varying problems gives the students the best chance to succeed and it's not that someone cannot learn, they just haven't been presented with an explanation they can understand and clicks for them. For beginning students who are children, I typically start with the standard of excellence book. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance.
