Awards:

Thumbtack Best of 2016 Award for Teaching

Overview:
I'm a New York based multi-instrumentalist eager to share the craft of making music. I have been performing and teaching professionally for 15 years, since having moved to New York to study at The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music. There, I learned many styles of music and skills that I use to this day while performing. I've had the opportunity to perform at many exciting venues including the Belleayre Jazz Festival, the Rose Theater at JALC, Pier 17, Terminal 5, Webster Hall, Symphony Space, Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola, and a live television performance on Live with Kelly and Ryan. I continue to play as a sideman in various bands while writing original music and leading a jazz/funk project of my own.
EXPERIENCE
I began teaching music lessons at the end of my studies at university. What began as a few saxophone students has grown, making private lessons an integral part of my work and affording me the chance to share my love of music on several other instruments including clarinet, flute, and piano. I regularly teach lessons at student's homes or in my home-studio. I also work as a studio teacher at Mark Murphy's Music, a private music school in the metro area. These experiences have given me many tools as a teacher, no matter if I'm working with a complete beginner, or someone who has played much in the past but would like to revisit their instrument.
METHODS USED
With beginner saxophone, flute and clarinet students, I like to use 'Standard of Excellence' books (and typically 'Faber Piano Adventures' with beginner piano). I find that these books address the fundamentals, that are crucial to learn while young, in a fun way. Specific interests and styles can be explored too, while at the same time getting a well-rounded musical background. With more experienced players, I use a combination of materials with more emphasis on personal goals and interests. Above all, learning an instrument and creating music is incredibly fun and engaging. Even if student has only learned a handful of notes or fingerings, I like to make sure they can play a simple melody with these, and hopefully are inspired to reach further week after week.
LESSON STYLE
I've learned that every person has their own unique experience with music, and its important to find out what inspires them. Mastering an instrument is a long road, and it's worth taking the time to learn that one technique or song that a student is clearly interested in even if it's a bit off track. At the same time, I believe that setting long and short term goals is the best way to progress. I love the moment when a piece of music is being finished and the student's sense of accomplishment sets in. I try to impart the feeling that any piece of music is within reach and there is much more to discover on your own as there is in the lesson room.

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
