For beginners, they must learn how to play the instrument. So books like standard of excellence or essential elements are great resources. I will guide them through what the book cannot explain and help them truly internalize aspects of playing their instrument. For more advanced players, we will work on tone, advanced technique, new styles as well as history, modern practices and more. I like to demonstrate concepts by modeling so the student knows what they are supposed to sound and look like. I will sometimes play to give an example or send a link to a recording to help the student. I encourage students to go at their own pace. When I teach, I always make sure that I present new concepts and ideas in a digestible way. I also make sure my student and I are always on the same page with their goals and their playing. If my students don't understand something or feel like they're in over their head, I don't rush them to figure it out. Backtracking is always seen as a positive thing.
