A passion for learning music is never something that can be forced. Therefore, when teaching a student, I never force them to achieve unattainable goals. I encourage them to learn at their own pace with "stepping-stone" goals; my students learn rudiments that build onto progressively more advanced techniques! I will also look at songs pertaining to their chosen instrument and their current proficiency at said instrument. The instrument I'm teaching will determine the methods of teaching I use, for example, if I'm teaching saxophone I use Hal Leonards essential elements to teach the fundamentals and after that depending on what style of music or type of player the student wants to be will determine what I teach them. We learn at different paces. For me to see someone accomplish a goal is a reward in itself and they should be proud as well they even accomplished something that is so major. I set realistic goals for my students each lesson and from there we add another goal to add to the last goal. I like to start where the student is. For my youngest students, we begin with the basics of counting and the music alphabet. For older students and adults, I assess prior knowledge and go from there. i like to have the students help me create up to three goals for the semester or year so that we can have something specific to aim for and measure.
