I believe in fundamental/conceptual and competency-based teaching. These fundaments, or "basics" can be taught through any methodology. Because I have experience teaching with many different types of method books, I will generally teach out of the method books that are the top preference of the band program in which the student is enrolled. Beyond the curriculum preferred by the band program in which the student is enrolled, I will determine which solos and/or methods are appropriate for each individual student based on their level of performance, the needs of the student, and the interests of the student. I do expect regular practice outside of lessons; I do not want lessons to simply be a guided practice session. Ideally, students would fully prepare the assigned material for each lesson-- not that it needs to be perfect, but that I can tell that he or she has been working on it. For students who are clearly putting in a reasonable amount of effort, I reward them by writing out melodies of their favorite pop songs for them to learn to play. Read More

Every student has different needs. I offer a relaxed style of teaching. Safe, comfortable evironment. Parents are always welcome to attend lessons for their students if need be. I have a student tell me what their goals are and we go from there. Some students may have a greater understanding of how the language on the page works. I have used and am open to a variety of band and piano methods. Essential Elements is ne of the best band instrument books, and I like the Fabre piano student book series. I Introduce solo and ensemble rep as quickly as possible also along with familiar tunes the student requests.older students and adults are canvasses as to where there musical interests lie.
