I use both the french methods Klose and Druet because they cover a lot of the needed technique but I treat each case differently depending on the students needs and aspirations. For beginning students, we usually focus on the "Essential Elements" workbooks; however, I may need need to make alterations depending on the needs of the student. The goal is for the student to learn while simultaneously showing interest and curiosity for the future. For students who are just starting out, I start with basic finger and breath support exercises. Once these become ingrained in the student's mind, I will introduce various excerpts based on their skill level, eventually working our way into solo repertoire. For students that have a few years under their belt, I prefer to get a grasp on what their strength and weaknesses are to assess what I can be of service, to select the solo or excerpt book that would best help improve their already developing talents. In 2000, I left medical school to pursue music and have never regretted the decision!  I went on to receive my bachelor's in 2004 and master's in 2012, both in instrumental music education.  I recently relocated to South Tampa after being a full time 4th-8th band director for 10 years in Chicago.  I also taught kindergarten music and K-3rd group piano.  I have been teaching private lessons on all instruments for 13 years, with an average of 10 students per week in my studio.
