I have been playing guitar since I was 6 years old (25 years) starting with classical and through the years delving deep into jazz, blues, rock, funk, soul, pop, fusion, and improv. For beginners, I like to start with the basic fundamentals of the instrument. Brass instruments are notoriously demanding, so making sure we have a solid grasp on the fundamentals is paramount. I like to start with the Essential Elements for Band and the Elementary Method for Cornet and Trumpet books. Once we have the fundamentals, I like to start introducing some solo pieces, jazz, and pop tunes that will allow the student to get a feel for all the music they can play on this instrument! Depending on the instrument and skill levels of the student I have different methods. For guitarists I typically like to start by learning techniques and building strength in their fingers before we move into theoretical concepts. For pianists I begin with technique but with also teaching them the musical staff and getting them started with reading music. Ultimately my method depends on the individual needs of the student.
