I find that fully immersing the student in their chosen style encourages them to practice and makes learning more fun and easy. Not pushing the student too hard is very important, all students learn at their own speed. Working with the students, such as doing improvisation and performing with them can help boost confidence in their abilities and can show students new ways of thinking about their instrument. Being sure the student has realistic goals is also important, this allows them to progress at their own level. Read More

For beginning students I start with the basics of music theory, and demonstrating how this theory is used in rock n' roll, blues, and classical depending on what the student is interested. for intermediate students I aim to build upon their knowledge and help them discover more music, and build a greater understanding of music theory. For advanced students I focus on guiding their studies to a greater level through analysis of historically great pieces, the study of harmony, and how to capture and retain the emotional and mental intrigue of the audience. If the student is a beginner, I would start with learning the fundamental chords needed to for a solid start to a music education. I would pick out a few fun and easy to learn songs, that contain the beginning chords to keep the lesson fun and interesting. I am a relaxed and easy-going teacher. I am good at staying focused but also fun to be around! I know that learning to play an instrument carries a unique set of challenges for each person, and these can be frustrating. Because I've experienced these challenges myself, my primary goal is to be there for my students, guiding them through the difficult moments as well as the joyful. I care about the student's progress more than sticking to a pre-determined rule book. Read More
