One thing is always constant in my teaching, and that is the monitoring of the students ability to read and interpret written music and tablature. I usually feel satisfied if the student is able to pick up on a simple song by the end of the first lesson and learning songs is the best way to learn guitar in my opinion. Teaching adults is fun, because what you lose in neuroplasticity you gain in life experience and general knowledge, which makes it easier to make a connection. I've had students in their fifties and sixties and we did nothing but practice progressive rock or tango (remember I am from Argentina) because that's what they wanted to do, and I was able to find exercises that would help them achieve their goals, besides practicing the songs that they've always wanted to play! So if a student is interested in building speed, we'll work on alternate picking exercises, or right hand patterns for classical and fingerstyle students.
