The lesson material is completely dependent on the student. I believe the most important things for someone to learn are keys, chords, scales,intervals and improvisation. For students are just beginning the first step is to learn the notes on the neck of the guitar. The next step is to begin learning intervals that way the student is able to build chords on the neck. With children who are just beginning, I use a rote approach similar to the Suzuki Method; e.g., First, I find an appropriate traditional melody that the student knows and loves, then I play it for them, and have them emulate what I am doing. I always approach teaching from a student to student basis. I like to cater to an individuals interests while trying to strengthen areas they tend to lack or not focus on. I also like to let the student take their own pace, but of course firmly push them to push themselves. I think this creates a well rounded individual and musician who is able to accomplish more knowing they were able to improve something they found incredibly difficult in the beginning. Read More
