I am a young and hardworking individual born and raised in Tulsa Oklahoma. I’ve been playing music ever since my brother got his guitar when I was about 9 and I probably played it more than he did. Music has always been a big part of my life and I enjoy everything that comes with it, playing, writing, listening, and teaching. I graduated the University of Tulsa in 2019 with a Bachelors in Music and a minor in film scoring. My college focus was jazz guitar and piano, but I always enjoy playing all kinds of music, so nothing is too foreign to me. I look forward to seeing you in Lessons and getting to know you!
Formal lessons are a new thing to me, but as far as teaching goes I’ve taught friends and colleagues along my music school career a thing or two about music production, theory, as well as guitar and piano techniques here and there. Teaching comes as a natural thing for me and I’ve lots of experience and knowledge I would love to pass on. I’ve been playing in and out of bands and ensembles for the past 5 years or so, but writing scores and music of my own has been what I’ve dedicated my time to. Though guitar is the instrument I have most experience with, the piano feels write at home to play and write on.
My biggest method I will focus on is learning music by ear and applying that to the other various aspects of music, like reading and writing. I feel that being able to play music fluently by ear is a skill most musicians tend to lack at times, and isn’t really a focus on in say a high school band or orchestra setting. I aim to teach listening methods, as well as reading, writing, and techniques methods on the desired instrument. Along with this, I plan to build a repitoir with each student so that they can leave knowing how to play the music they enjoy just by listening to it.
I always approach teaching from a student to student basis. I like to cater to an individuals interests while trying to strengthen areas they tend to lack or not focus on. I also like to let the student take their own pace, but of course firmly push them to push themselves. I think this creates a well rounded individual and musician who is able to accomplish more knowing they were able to improve something they found incredibly difficult in the beginning. I’ve found that sense of accomplishment creates a passion for music, or any challenge a student might face.
