I also helped to found their folk ensemble, playing guitar and singing with them for another year. I also encouraged my students to be involved in performances and recitals that give them opportunity to utilize their skills. Particularly playing in church is a great outlet for many of my students. I am a firm believer in the idea that not all people learn best in the same way. So I immediately try to understand each student and how they most effectively learn and retain information in the lesson. Having taken lessons on several instruments and being self-taught on others I understand that the most important thing a teacher can instill in their student is 1) the basic knowledge to understand the instrument, and 2) the passion to discover and teach themselves. After all, discovery is a far more effective teacher than instruction. I believe it is my job to guide a student onto the right track with a basic knowledge-base, and teach them to love music.
