I began taking private lessons shortly after I joined the band program in middle school. I continued to take lessons all throughout high school and college. Shortly after graduating high school I was offered the position of drum instructor. During college I taught for several years as the drum instructor at Winter Haven High School. For beginning students, I typically start with the Alfred or Mel Bay Method. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce other repertoire where appropriate. For students who have some experience, I will try to find out what the student is interested in, and direct my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging. For students who are young children, I typically start by addressing the importance of playing what you hear. So, I will teach them beginner classics, such as Twinkle Twinkle and Merry had a Littl eLamb, but I also teach them what thunder sounds like, or a siren, and etc. by drawing on everyday life obejects that create noise. I then move on to learn my student's interests to device a method of positive reinforcement if they complete their homework asssignments or answer questions correctly, usually in the past this has been candy.
