It is important to me that my students gain the necessary knowledge and skills to be able to continue making music after lessons with me end. I want to make sure that they develop a strong foundation for music understanding and are able to apply it to their chosen instrument. Read More

First, I believe it is important all students have a firm grasp on the fundamentals of the instrument, which may include some scale exercises, for example. Once we achieve a basic level, we can move along to some solo repertoire, etudes, and tunes that target a specific area to keep lessons fun and engaging, all while reaffirming subjects learned previously. Regarding jazz and improvisation, lessons will cover a broad spectrum, ranging from modal improvisation, to bebop and postmodern styles, all while focusing on harmonic functionality and individual expression. I like Faber and Faber piano adventures because they teach a lot like I do. I've been developing a power point and You Tube presentation to go along with the book for those students who need more visual stimulus. I like various curruiculum's with Trumpet and Brass players. I stay around the Trumpet players Bible using an Arban's book with some Clark exercises along with the students band book to help them not to form bad habits. Read More

I work with Rubank or any method books provided by their band instructor. There will be supplemental materials, especially for more advanced students, that are instrument specific such as etudes and technical exercises. We will continue focusing on band literature, contemporary, classical, or solo literature depending on the goals of the students and their interests. While there are some general methods, it is best to meet the student where their needs are and tailor the specific methods to those needs. Read More

As a general starting place, however, I typically start with Trevor Wye's Beginner's Book for the Flute: Part 1 for my novice students. Additionally, I introduce the 12 major scales and arpeggios- which we continue to study and build on throughout our lessons. As the student progresses and has a firm grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their level of playing. Read More
