My teaching experience dates back to my time in high school. Being the saxophone section leader for my schools marching band I was expected to make sure the members of my section knew what they were doing. If there happen to be someone who wanted to start taking on saxophone for the band, I was expected to teach them how to play. I then went to college for Music Therapy where I was expected to teach and lead groups of clients in musical interventions. Read More

There is nothing more rewarding than seeing my students flourish. My students will often come to the first lesson worried about their ability and leave with more than a grin on their face because it was not at all what they were expecting. I strive to make my teaching style unique to each individual. My students find that I can explain a concept or practice technique to them in multiple ways if they do not understand it the first time. I first began teaching while still completing my Bachelors degree at William Paterson in 2011. Most of my students were beginning level piano students, but I had a few more advanced students as well as some people studying saxophone with me. My teaching philosophy is to combine teaching the technique of an instrument with learning songs as well as theory and improvisation/composition. Everyone learns technique, but learning music that I wanted to learn, learning how those songs were written (theory), and eventually elaborating on those songs (improvisation), and writing my own music (composition), was what really got me deeply engaged in the act of practicing and making music, and I have found over several years of teaching that it keeps my students engaged and enjoying the learning process. In my lessons, I value both exploring self expression and introducing new concrete information in each lesson. Self expression can manifest in picking songs we learn, learning how to improvise, exploring dynamics and tone quality, song writing, and countless other ways! Play and performance are very important to the learning process and are great ways to explore the skills my students acquire. I always encourage my students to seek out performance opportunities, the world needs your voice! Read More

I am always listening and reacting to my students. I use a variety of methods in my teaching depending on what my students need most. Some students respond really well to demonstration and imagery, while others prefer a more directional approach in understanding the anatomy of the body and a technical understanding of what needs to be done, I strive to incorporate my lessons with theoretical and stylistic knowledge to help my students develop a self-aware ability to interpret pieces of all eras on their own.
