I started teaching flute lessons to my friends in high school from my parents' basement in 2009. Since then, I've gone on to college and have maintained a studio throughout that time. As a teaching assistant, I also taught college courses at the University of Northern Iowa for music education students and undergraduate flute students. In addition to private lessons, I was a Music Together teacher for early childhood music, and worked as an instrument repair technician. Read More
Instruments: Guitar, Flute, Drums, Piccolo, Acoustic Guitar
I absolutely love getting students really excited about their instrument. I like to show videos of high level playing and introduce a wide variety of genres and styles while I find exactly what it is that inspires the student to play. My lesson structure normally consists of a warm up, rudiment/sticking work, reading or playing exercise and new concepts, then work on a song. I really try to get my students playing along with tracks so they can hear how drums sound in a band setting and apply it to their playing! Read More
Instruments: Flute
My teaching style is very comprehensive. I believe that a good musician is a well-rounded musician, and an understanding of music theory and history is important to a thorough understanding of the music. I have been blessed with teachers who made these potentially confusing areas fun and engaging, and I enjoy finding ways to pass that on to my students. I also place a high degree of emphasis on listening, both to oneself and to other performers, recordings, and styles. Read More
Instruments: Voice, Trumpet, Trombone, Saxophone, Flute, Clarinet, Euphonium, Piccolo, Mallet Percussion
I began teaching privately during high school. I would teach local middle school students. I have taught privately off and on since then. I encourage regular practice at home on a consistent schedule. I work with whichever book the students classroom teacher uses and also supplement my own pieces. I encourage students to have a say in their own learning by picking music they like that will still be educational. Read More
Instruments: Piano, Guitar, Trumpet, Saxophone, Flute, Clarinet, French Horn, Oboe, Electric Guitar, Acoustic Guitar
For beginning students I start with basics: learning how to hold the instrument, put it together, etc. Then when that is solid we learn a few notes. From there we go to the Rubank books. At the same time, we start reading music that I find appropriate for them. For adults, it depends on what they want to learn. Popular songs or songs they request. But I also push for technical mastery of the instrument so I push for knowledge of scales and then keep pushing with more challenging/fun pieces. Read More
