Overview:
I'm a dynamic, dedicated flutist with a deep love for music and a passion for communicating that love to others. I hold degrees in flute performance from the Cleveland Institute of Music and have performed and taught extensively in the Cleveland and western New York areas. I also have a special interest in music theory and music history, having earned Early Music Performer's Certificates through the joint music program with Case Western Reserve University and tutored music theory at the Cleveland Institute of Music.
EXPERIENCE
I have been teaching since I was in high school, maintaining a private studio and teaching lessons and sectionals in Cleveland schools. Having grown up in a large family, I love working with children and relate well to all ages. I'm goal-oriented and methodical, but I'm also passionate about what I do and I love nothing more than to impart that passion. I currently teach extensively throughout northern Virginia and hold the position of music teacher at the Ambleside School in Herndon. I am always ready to welcome new students of all ages and abilities!
METHODS USED
I typically start beginners with the Rubank method, as it contains a good balance of fundamentals, technical exercises, and fun, tuneful melodies. Particularly when working with children, I supplement this with my own devices, including flash cards and various learning games. I gradually incorporate solo material as appropriate. While I personally am primarily a classical musician, I make a point of including any style that is of special interest to the student in order to make music as enjoyable and relatable as possible.
LESSON STYLE
My teaching style is very comprehensive. I believe that a good musician is a well-rounded musician, and an understanding of music theory and history is important to a thorough understanding of the music. I have been blessed with teachers who made these potentially confusing areas fun and engaging, and I enjoy finding ways to pass that on to my students. I also place a high degree of emphasis on listening, both to oneself and to other performers, recordings, and styles. I believe that music is an incredibly important part of life-- from the discipline it builds to the joy and beauty it brings-- and my biggest goal is always to find ways to connect to and inspire my students.

My 7 year-old daughter loves her flute lessons with Katrina. Katrina does an incredible job of figuring out how to best present and reinforce skills. She is incredibly patient and works through my daughter's frustrated moments with ease. My daughter loves music now, greatly because of her flute lessons with Katrina.

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
