Music has been a passion of mine my entire life. I started piano at the age of 4, flute at the age of 10, and sang throughout. I have enjoyed performing in many venues from coffee shops to churches to big music halls; functions from weddings and funerals to special dinners; and just for fun with family and friends. My teaching follows the books quite a bit, so that the student remembers what was taught when they go home and practice. I like for the student to have a notebook that I can write in supplemental information. I understand that each student learns differently and I am able to differentiate my teaching methods to best fit the student needs. I like to challenge my students when I feel they should be. I also try very hard to showcase them whenever possible to show the community the great talent that is amongst us. I would have to say my main approach to teaching is figuring out what works best for each individual student, seeing as though everyone learns differently and at different paces. For beginning or new students I like to begin with the Faber and Faber lesson books, although I am flexible to use whatever methods course works best for each individual student. Once a student has some beginner playing skills and theory basics, I like to encourage them to pick songs that they enjoy playing. I focus on a combination of classical, Disney, pop, and jazz. I encourage students to practice on a regular basis, write in their music (if necessary), ask for help (communication with what is and isn't working is key to success), and to work in a step by step system to learning music. I'm a passionate and creative instructor who loves working with students of all ages and sharing my love of music. I graduated in 2012 from Indiana State University with Bachelor degree in Music Education. My primary instrument is the flute. I've played the flute for 14 years in various ensembles throughout the years. I've had great opportunities to work with children throughout my college years as well as beyond those years. I've had the opportunity to teach a week-long music camp, as well as bring a music supplement to YMCA after school and summer programs. Currently I'm teaching Elementary Music between 3 schools.
