I began teaching flute lessons when I was in my undergraduate degree. I had private students from local high schools in Iowa City. I then was selected to be the flute instructor at a New Horizon's Band Program. In this program, I taught flute choir to retired adults twice each week, and some of them became my private students. For beginning students I typically begin with either the Rubank Elementary Method Series, Flute 101 series or the Trevor Wye series. After our initial lesson together I will decide which flute method series is appropriate for each student.   I typically like to have a student continue through an entire series of books as it gives a good comprehensive guide to the basics of flute playing.  I also like to include duets in my lessons therefore I typically begin with the Rubank Duets Volume One and later progress to the advance method duets.  As a student progresses and has a firm grasp of the basics I begin to introduce various solo repertoire as well as etude books to allow them to continue to develop their tecnhique.  Read More

For beginning and intermediate students, I typically start with the basic understanding of the musical staff, note names, and how to associate those names with the flute fingerings. I use a wide variety of method books for students of all ages to gauge what students do and do not know theoretically. Tone production and quality comes from working through breath control and regular exercises from the practices of Geoffrey Gilbert, William Bennet, Marcel Moise, Paul Taffenell, and Eldred Spell.
