I am a passionate teacher and performer who loves working with students of all ages. I completed my Bachelor or Music degree at the University of Iowa in Music Education and Flute Performance. I then spent a year student teaching and substitute teaching which taking auditions for a masters program. I am currently enrolled at the University of Georgia in Flute Performance. While I love to perform, my ultimate goal is to teach at a university or have my own private studio. Nothing gives me more joy than seeing my students grow in music and in life.
I began teaching flute lessons when I was in my undergraduate degree. I had private students from local high schools in Iowa City. I then was selected to be the flute instructor at a New Horizon's Band Program. In this program, I taught flute choir to retired adults twice each week, and some of them became my private students. As my education at the University of Iowa came to a close, I completed my practicum in a general music program and my student teaching at a large high school and middle school. Once I graduated, I substitute taught in public schools for six months. I now am a student at the University of Georgia, and I teach Aural Skills to a class of undergraduate music majors.
No matter the age of the student, I am a firm believer in the practice of fundamentals. I incorporate these by creating my own exercises for students according to their needs, and then applying these concepts to etudes and solo repertoire. While my main goal is to help improve the student's flute and musicianship skills, I also aim to nurture a life-long love of music. Classical music isn't for everyone, and I often play duets, soundtrack music, and broadway music with my students. Whatever my students' goals are, I would like them to have a well-rounded education. That is, I would like them to be great musicians, not just flutists. To achieve this, I use a variety of different methods such as teaching solfege and methods stemming from Dalcroze.
Nothing brings me more joy than to see my students grow in music and in life. I am always thinking about where my students currently are and where they realistically could be. I view learning flute skills much like what you would experience in a video game. One could finish a level right away, or it could take them several days or weeks. To me, it doesn't matter when they finish the level. Everyone has a different way of understanding concepts, and I do my best to prepare for those different learning styles.
