I usually start out using the Rubank Method, but I frequently incorporate some Suzuki and other ear training methods as well. I also like to use Trevor Wye's books for more advanced students. I like to expose all students to a classical repertoire of performance pieces, using basics for beginners and progressing in difficulty as the student gains more control of the instrument. I use a variety of books with etudes, or studies, to give students a strong background in technique while also teaching various musical concepts such as theory and improvisation. Read More

My teaching experience started in college 27 years ago and I have maintained a consistent student roster since 2004. Encouraging a regular practice schedule is a key point especially for younger students in progressing and gaining a passion for the instrument. My curriculum in based on learning western technique with heavy emphasis on learning the circle of fifths. Students learn to play all major and minor scales, and learn to apply them in music by playing etudes in all 24 keys. I also incorporate aspects of the Suzuki method such as tone exercises, developing a good ear, and repertoire provided in their books. I use a pass-off chart to motivate and direct students in their progress. Read More

I encourage my students to practice smart instead of long. This is especially important for young students. I teach my students to self-evaluate their own playing. When difficult areas are recognized, this is where the practicing focus should be. Above all, music should be enjoyable! Hard work disguised as FUN is my goal. I am great at giving positive feedback. I enjoy celebrating success. I feel that it is important to let the student set the pace and then encourage from there. Read More
Instruments: Flute, Ukulele

I work with the student to create realistic goals, both short and long term. Positive feedback is important to me, and it is important that the student finds joy in seeing improvements, however small. I think of each lesson as a custom experience. Read More
