I have been teaching flute since 2015. Where ever I have traveled for work or school, I have been able to teach private lessons for the duration of my stay. I've taught masterclasses in middle schools, held sectionals for high schools, and assisted with a summer rookie camp for incoming freshman flute players. I've attended and participated in professional masterclasses. In college I was a TA for music theory, and was also first chair and section leader for much of my time there. Read More

My first instrument, the piano, gave me a strong basis in rhythm and connecting how music works. My first goal is to help you have fun! Music is a stress-reliever, and a brain builder that is only enjoyable when we work toward things you are interesting in. Yes, we will work on music theory and technique, but it will be tailored to motivate progress on your current piece. While regular practice is important, we can tailor the speed and intensity of curriculum to your schedule. Read More

I usually start out using the Rubank Method, but I frequently incorporate some Suzuki and other ear training methods as well. I also like to use Trevor Wyes books for more advanced students. I like to expose all students to a classical repertoire of performance pieces, using basics for beginners and progressing in difficulty as the student gains more control of the instrument. I use a variety of books with etudes, or studies, to give students a strong background in technique while also teaching various musical concepts such as theory and improvisation. Read More

I encourage my students to practice smart instead of long. This is especially important for young students. I teach my students to self-evaluate their own playing. When difficult areas are recognized, this is where the practicing focus should be. Above all, music should be enjoyable! Hard work disguised as FUN is my goal. I am great at giving positive feedback. I enjoy celebrating success. I feel that it is important to let the student set the pace and then encourage from there. Read More

In lessons, I concentrate on fundamentals (breathing, tone, technique, tonguing, etc), as these are often shorted in the school classroom and will further enable the student long-term. I strive to make abstract concepts concrete by using actions and icons, especially for younger students. It is very important to me that I find out where the student is at so that I can meet them there and we can work together. Read More
