Growing up with a music teacher for a mom, I began playing piano, learning music theory, and sight-reading at age 5. After years of studying piano, I expanded my musical journey by picking up the trombone, bass, guitar, and drums by the age of 12. I am a passionate instructor who loves to watch students grow and develop. I emphasize the importance of developing good technique and a fundamental understanding of the basic components of music: major and minor scales, arpeggios, chords, modes and chord progressions. I believe that technical facility makes it easier to accomplish musical goals while developing musicianship. I like to tailor my lessons to each student using music that the student brings to me to create lessons and exercises. I have been teaching music for nearly 20 years. I am the after school music teacher for the Norwood School District. My primary goal is to make sure students are having fun and enjoying themselves during lessons. I have a laid-back disposition. During the first lesson Ill ask students what they would like to learn about. Then my goal is to facilitate how to reach that goal. The primary responsibility of a music teacher is to cultivate music literacy; an understanding of music from both a fundamental and holistic standpoint. Fundamentals would include: technique, sight-reading, rhythms, scales, arpeggios, rudiments, chords, etc. Holistic concepts would include: music history, music theory, ear training, ethnomusicology, etc. My ultimate goal for all of my students is to help them become independent and enthusiastic musicians.
