For beginning students, I prefer to use Essential Elements by Bruce Pearson. This is the book I learned from and have been using to teach. I enjoy this book because of its progression system and the incorporation of solos throughput instead of just exercises for the students to play through. I have worked for 15 years in a Big Band that performed educational concerts and brought live performances and exposure of musical instruments to kindergarten, elementary, middle, and high schools that sometimes did not have the luxury of a music program.
