With students that are full beginners, I like to start them out with some reading to show them how time is divided and how to identify notes on the staff. I also create charts and diagrams tailored to the interests of my specific students. I teach my students how to read and write their own music. There's more to learning to play an instrument than scales and chords. My teaching method is more holistic covering, as needed, technique, interpretation, theory, performance, ear training, music listening, transcription, music copying, the mechanics of the instrument. We usually begin with pad and pen and move from there. When suitable, an appropriate method book or specific texts are chosen. My method also includes time playing together. I like to think of my teaching styles and methods as very practical yet very encouraging and nurturing. The best way to ingrain a new concept or idea I have found is to teach someone a practical way in how to use it, usually through learning a new song or exercise which expands their horizons and outlook on things.
